June is here, and it’s Pride Month—a time to celebrate and honor the LGBTQ+ community! Although I don’t have a large following on this site, I want to dedicate this month to reviewing books that center around LGBTQ+ characters, highlighting their stories, struggles, and triumphs. From heartfelt romances to thrilling fantasies, these books offer a glimpse into diverse experiences and perspectives. I hope you’ll enjoy these reviews as I explore the captivating tales that not only entertain but also celebrate love, identity, and the enduring spirit of the LGBTQ+ community. First on the list is Justinian Huang’s debut novel “The Emperor and The Endless Palace”.

Justininan’s novel starts off with a very beautiful quote,”What if I told you that the feeling we call love is actually the feeling of metaphysical recognition, when your soul remembers someone from a previous life?” After reading that, I knew that I was embark on a timeless journey that showed the ups and down’s of falling in love with someone throughout time.

Set in the year 4 BCE, we are first introduced to an ambitious courtier tasked with seducing a young emperor. Their relationship, fraught with power dynamics and court intrigue, sets the tone for a tale that is as much about survival as it is about love. Fast forward to 1740, a lonely innkeeper’s encounter with a mysterious visitor seeking a rare medicine unleashes unforeseen supernatural horrors. This segment of the novel is rich with atmospheric tension and dark enchantment. Finally, in present-day Los Angeles, a college student meets a beautiful stranger at what was essentially a circuit party, feeling an unshakeable sense of familiarity.

Huang’s ability to weave these seemingly disparate stories into a cohesive narrative is nothing short of brilliant. Each timeline is meticulously crafted, with rich historical detail and vibrant settings that transport the reader from the treacherous walls of an ancient palace to the heart-pounding drug infused dance floors of modern LA.

The recurring theme of metaphysical recognition—that love is a powerful force, reconnecting souls across lifetimes—is handled with both subtlety and depth. The characters, reborn in different eras, remain intrinsically linked by their undying love. Their encounters are charged with an intensity that speaks to the enduring nature of their bond, yet they are continuously tested by the worlds around them.

What sets The Emperor and the Endless Palace apart is its genre-bending nature. It is a romantasy that deftly balances elements of romance, fantasy, and historical fiction. The romantic elements are both tender and fiery, offering equal parts mess and swoon, while the fantasy aspects introduce thrilling twists that keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Huang’s debut is a triumph not just for its storytelling but also for its exploration of queer romance. The relationships are portrayed with authenticity and depth, providing much-needed representation in the genre. The characters are complex and morally shifty, adding layers of intrigue and unpredictability to the narrative.

The Emperor and the Endless Palace is a breathtaking journey through time and love. Justinian Huang has crafted a novel that is as epic as it is intimate, blending historical detail with fantastical elements to create a story that lingers long after the final page. Whether you’re a fan of romance, fantasy, or historical fiction, this book is a must-read. Prepare to be swept off your feet by a tale of love that defies time itself.
